Goodman Furnace Review
How Efficient are Goodman Furnaces?
- Up to 98% AFUE rating for select furnace models
- Energy Star-qualified furnaces
Goodman has furnaces with 80% to 98% Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratings. The AFUE rating is a standard rating required for all heating systems, and the 98% AFUE rating of the Goodman GMVM97 Gas Furnace means that 98 cents of every dollar is used as energy to warm a home. The high-efficiency rating from Goodman’s furnaces translates to yearly energy savings.
The lowest rating allowed for furnaces is 80% AFUE. Anything lower will yield less energy savings and have a negative impact on the environment due to the amount of natural gas consumed and released as greenhouse emissions. Even though Goodman has a couple of furnaces with an 80% AFUE rating, these furnaces have a lower upfront cost while still offering yearly energy savings.
Every furnace model has an energy guide label so homeowners can see the AFUE rating of their Goodman furnace. Goodman has an energy calculator on their website to help homeowners understand their potential energy savings, depending on their zip code, home size, and other factors.
Before taking advantage of energy savings, homeowners should consider how much it can cost to own a Goodman furnace.
How Much Does a Goodman Furnace Cost?
- Goodman furnaces can cost between $4,200 to $15,000
- Sold through licensed contractors only
- Rebates are available for select Goodman furnaces
A new furnace system is a major investment for any homeowner, but Goodman furnaces are priced slightly lower than some of the other top manufacturers. Their high efficiency gas furnaces (those with high AFUE ratings) tend to be among the higher end of the price range, whereas their less efficient furnaces are entry-level models that are more affordable.
The price for each Goodman furnace is just the cost of the unit alone, and it does not include other pricing factors such as installation labor, ductwork, additional modifications, and any additional costs factored into a Goodman furnace installation.
Special rebates are available on select Goodman furnaces to help offset the upfront costs. Qualifying Goodman furnaces can provide homeowners up to $1,000 in a special rebate from SoCal Gas and up to $600 in a federal tax credit.
Besides special rebates, what other features can homeowners take advantage of with a Goodman furnace? We’ll review those in the following section.
What Features Do Goodman Furnaces Have?
- CoolCloud smartphone connectivity
- ComfortBridge Technology maximizes efficiency
- Wrinkle bend technology on heat exchangers
Goodman has a few unique features to help it stand out from competing furnace manufacturers. Their furnaces are built with parts designed to maximize efficiency while providing homes with heating.
Some of their parts include a multi-speed permanent split capacitor, which helps cut down energy consumption while providing airflow for comfort. Goodman furnaces come with variable-speed electronically commutated motors (ECM) for efficient and precise flow of hot air. Their heat exchangers have a tubular design to maintain efficient heat transfer and provide durability.
One of the biggest selling points of Goodman furnaces is its ComfortBridge Technology, which monitors and gathers furnace performance data to make adjustments that can help minimize the amount of energy used to heat a home. Goodman furnaces are also compatible with the CoolCloud HVAC app. The app allows licensed contractors to connect with a Goodman furnace to configure and diagnose the system promptly.
These features may sound enticing, but are they backed by a strong warranty?
What’s the Warranty on a Goodman Furnace?
- Lifetime limited warranty on heat exchanger
- 10-year unit replacement limited warranty
- 10-year limited warranty on parts
Goodman offers one of the industry’s best warranties for their furnaces. Homeowners will need to register their furnace on Goodman’s website within 60 days of installation to get all of the benefits from the warranties.
Each furnace from Goodman comes with a physical copy of the model’s warranty certificate. A digital copy is available online through their website.
Any part found defective is subject to a warranty claim. Still, Goodman won’t cover any damage caused by the bad installation or as a result of natural disasters and other weather-related events.
The list of problems not covered is detailed on the warranty certificate. Unlike other manufacturers, Goodman doesn’t cover any labor required for warranty repairs, and the responsibility falls to the homeowner. Although the brand doesn’t have warranty coverage for labor, some HVAC companies may offer labor coverage on certain repairs.
