Yom Tov are days of celebration on which certain activities are prohibited, such as starting a new fire and refraining from working. If you have a tankless water heater, which creates a flame to heat water on demand, you may wonder if you can use it during Yom Tov. Thanks to recirculation pumps and lines, you can maintain hot water usage while observing Yom Tov.
The instructions for setting up your tankless water heater’s recirculation settings vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. In this article, we’ll show you how to prepare your Noritz tankless water heater so that your home has hot water available and complies with the traditions of Yom Tov.
At Monkey Wrench, our technicians receive specialized training with the top brands in tankless water heaters, such as Noritz. Since 2007, we’ve installed and serviced tankless water heaters throughout Los Angeles and the surrounding areas. For over 15 years, we’ve built special relationships with homeowners who observe Yom Tov but are unsure how to access hot water from their Noritz tankless water heaters.
Let’s get started!
Steps to Prepare My Noritz Tankless Water Heater for Yom Tov
Before we proceed with the instructions, we’ll divide them into two categories: Noritz tankless water heaters with external or internal recirculation pumps.
Recirculation lines help cut down the time it takes for hot water to reach a fixture in your home by circulating hot water throughout your home’s water lines. Whenever you turn on a hot water faucet in your home, it sets off the flow sensor in your tankless water heater. It will then create a flame on demand and heat water as it passes through.
Because it creates a flame each time hot water is needed, it does not comply in observance with Yom Tov. Recirculation lines bypass the need to create a flame by keeping water warm and available for use with the following benefits.
- Reduce the wait time for hot water
- Improve energy efficiency
- Reduces water waste
- Complies with Yom Tov
In the next section, we’ll first review how to easily set up your Noritz tankless water heaters with external heat pumps.
Setting Up Noritz Tankless Water Heaters With External Recirculation Pumps
The instructions for setting up your Noritz tankless water heater with a recirculation pump are simple.
Before Yom Tov:
- Go to your tankless water heater and locate the external recirculation pump.
- Locate the timer on the pump.
- Not all recirculation pumps look the same, but they should all have a timer.
- The timer is usually set to “auto” or “timer.”
- You can switch the pump’s setting from “auto” or “timer” to the “ON” position.
After Yom Tov:
- Go to your tankless water heater’s recirculation pump timer.
- Switch the setting from the “ON” position and put it back to “timer” or “auto.”
These instructions apply to any Noritz tankless water heater model with an external recirculation line pump. This accessory isn’t included with most Noritz tankless water heater installations. Check out our tankless water heater installation page for more information on scheduling an appointment to install a recirculation pump.
Noritz offers an external recirculation pump accessory, but it also offers the NRCR tankless water heater series, designed with a built-in recirculation pump. The NRCR has instructions for Yom Tov preparation, which we’ll go over in the next section.
Setting Up Noritz Tankless Water Heaters With Internal Recirculation Pumps
The Noritz NRCR111 and NRCR92 are tankless water heaters with internal recirculation pumps. These two units have their own instructions for the recirculation settings in preparation for Yom Tov.
The settings depend on which remote controller you have for the unit. It’s important to note that neither of these remote controllers is included in a standard installation, but Noritz offers them as additional accessories.
The two remote controllers are the RC-9018 and the RC-7651. If you need help determining which one you have, look for the model number on the front side of the controller.

Follow the instructions below for setting up the timer on your Noritz tankless water heater using the RC-9018.
