Brands like Brita provide water filtration so homes can quench their thirst without having to buy bottled water cases. Brita water filters are arguably the most recognizable brands for improving a home’s water quality. Despite their popularity, are these water filters worth the hype?
For almost two decades, we at Monkey Wrench have helped homeowners understand the importance of water filtration and all the different types of filters available, including Brita. After installing and servicing hundreds of water filtration systems, we’ve seen what makes some filters better than others.
Although Brita’s products are designed to filter water, they have some limitations. We’ll review Brita water filters in the following categories to see what they can and cannot do.
- Types of filters available
- Technology
- Cost
- What they don’t filter
At the end of this article, you gain a better understanding of what Brita filters can do and if they’re worth investing in for you and your family.
Let’s jump right in!
What Products Does Brita Offer?
Brita offers a variety of products that homeowners can keep at home or on the go. Regardless of the product, every one of Brita’s water filters is designed to improve tap water’s taste and overall quality.
Here’s a closer look at Brita’s water filtration products.
Pitchers: One of the most popular Brita products, these pitchers have capacities ranging from 6 to 12 cups. The Brita water pitchers come in different colors, including white, black, gray, blue, teal, red, and a merlot red. These pitchers come with filters offered by Brita.
Dispensers: The Brita water dispensers have a larger capacity than the pitchers, holding 25 or 27 cups. They’re only available in black, with one dispenser also available in gray.
Faucet Mounts: Unlike pitchers and dispensers, which need to be refilled, the Brita faucet mounts provide immediate access to filtered water. The Brita mount has a knob that can switch between filtered and unfiltered water.
Bottles: For on-the-go filtered water, Brita offers a plastic or stainless steel water bottle. The stainless steel Brita water bottle has a 20 or 32-ounce capacity. The hard-sided plastic Brita water bottles are available in 26 or 32 capacity.
All Brita products share a similar filtration technology, which we’ll review in the next section.
Brita Water Filter Technology
All of Brita’s filters use activated carbon technology to improve water quality by removing chlorine. Similar to carbon filters, Brita’s products enhance water taste and remove any odors found in regular tap water. Carbon filtration uses activated carbon granules or blocks to reduce contaminants like chlorine.
Even though all of Brita’s filters are carbon filters, each one can remove additional impurities that the other filters can’t. Here’s a look at each filter Brita uses.
Brita water bottle filter: The traveling water bottle from Brita features a mini carbon block filter that removes chlorine and some particulates.
Brita faucet mount filter: The filter in the mounted faucet reduces chlorine and contaminants like lead, asbestos, and sediment.
Brita refillable filter: This filter can remove mercury, cadmium, zinc, and copper minerals.
Brita standard filter: The standard filter removes the same contaminants as the refillable filter.
BritaPlus filter: Besides chlorine, this particular filter will reduce mercury, benzene, cadmium, copper, and other impurities.
Brita Elite filter: This high-end filter can remove most contaminants that other Brita filters can reduce. It is the only one besides the faucet mount that can remove lead.
The filters must be replaced after a certain amount of time. The BritaPlus standard, refillable, and bottle filters should be replaced every two months. The Brita faucet mount should be replaced in four months, and the Elite filter can last six months before replacement.
In addition to improved water quality thanks to its carbon filters, Brita is a popular choice among homeowners because of its low cost.
How Much Do Brita Water Filters Cost?
One of the biggest appeals of Brita water filtration products is their affordable pricing. Brita’s products are under $49.99, making them accessible to more homeowners.
Even though Brita’s products are affordable, homeowners must invest in replacement filters. The filters are sold in packs or individually, and their prices can range from under $10 to $35, depending on the type of filter.
The pricing for Brita products and filter replacements is standard among other filtration products. Even though homeowners must replace their filters, investing in filter replacements is more environmentally friendly than buying plastic water bottles.
Investing in a Brita filter can offer plenty of benefits associated with carbon filtration, but can they remove all contaminants?
What Do Brita Filters Not Remove?
Brita’s ability to remove chlorine and improve water is highly effective but doesn’t purify water. These filters are only designated to reduce some contaminants but not all of the impurities found in water.
Here’s a list of the contaminants that Brita filters don’t remove.
- Bacteria, viruses, and microbes
- Pesticides
- Herbicides
- Pharmaceutical by-products
- Fluoride
- Hard water
For improved water filtration, homeowners can pair their Brita filters with other filtration systems like sediment filters and water softeners for soft water benefits. For the best filtration, homeowners can also look into a reverse osmosis system, which can provide 99.9% water purification and combines carbon filtration similar to Brita with other filters.
Are Brita Water Filters Worth It?
Brita filters are an excellent way for homeowners and their families to enjoy better-tasting drinking water. Now that you’ve read about the different products Brita offers and the types of filters they use, you can move forward with choosing to invest in one.
